What a couple of weeks! I came down with the flu two weeks and laid in bed for 6 days. I am still on the mend with a terrible cough but the stuffy head is soooo much better. THEN my husband got it and died for 4-5 days and is still recuperating. Our next victim was my son Max. He came home from ski club Friday not feeling well and has been sick since. Unfortunately, Keith and I are taking turns staying home with him. Hoping he feels better tomorrow and really hoping this flu misses Jaiden.
Well in that time students have been learning so much! They are working on the last of their multiplication facts that they struggle with in the 6, 7 and 8s tables. They have grown so much and confidence is booming. We have slowly started the fraction unit. I say slowly because I am making sure students are fully understanding it concretely before moving on. Students have been folding papers into the 1/2, 1/4, 1/3 machine and understanding that the rectangular array is a whole that is then folded into equal parts. Students are fully understanding this concept and we have moved into adding and multiplying fractions. Of course they can quickly add and multiply but to understand concretely will support their learning for so many skills ahead. I am so proud of them.
We have started a new unit on concentration. Students need to determine the best concentration of koolaid and what determines if it is correct- color, taste, amount... They of course love to taste test.
Watch your solution change color as you mix chemicals with water. Then check molarity with the concentration meter. What are all the ways you can change the concentration of your solution? Switch solutes to compare different chemicals and find out how concentrated you can go before you hit saturation!
From Miss Chrusciel-
Language arts: This week we will continue to meet in our book clubs for reading. Specifically, we will be focusing on thinking like the characters in the book, using the characters' thoughts as a guide, and by thinking of the story as a whole. Independently, the kids will be assigned reading for their club, working on readers' responses, grammar as well as their friendly letter performance task.
In writing, we will continue to focus on opinion writing. We will take a look at how to formulate an opinion piece and hopefully the kids will begin drafting their own based on a debate we read in class.
Social Studies: We will be discussing and reading about colonization and the Revolutionary War--as well as some background to the colonies. The kids will also do some practice with comprehension questions based on a reading we will complete in class. Finally, they will be having a quiz at the end of the week on the 7 continents.
