Week of March 9

Image for linkStudents had a different schedule today due to Smarter Balance practice testing by third grade.  The schedule will change like this as each group practices this test in the library and lab. We will have extended modified schedule during the two weeks that each grade level actually takes the actual test in April. I will share that schedule with you as we get closer.  Here is a link to some information for Parents- INFO and practice tests that you can view with your child- Tests.

Bingo night is this Wednesday 6-7:30, buy your bingo tickets at the door. And if you are Baking something for our bake sale bring it in to the front office anytime during the school day.Come join us for a fun, entertaining night full of games, laughs and prizes.

In math this week, your child will take take a fraction pretest. This formative assessment will help us find out where we need to focus during our fraction unit. We will continue to look at fractions concretely in the form of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/6. Students are learning how to count with each fraction, and are being introduced to adding and subtracting with like and unlike denominators.  Students will continue with multiplying with threes and be tested on this by Friday. They are working hard to reach their best time and have shown so much progress.

In science students will use their investigation skills and understanding of saturation to find the mystery chemical.  They are saturating 50ml water with the mystery chemical, filtering any leftover and then weighing their saturated solution in grams.  Looking forward to seeing them show their knowledge and understanding of the skills learned.

From Mrs. Chrusciel-
In language arts this week we will be starting book clubs!  The kids have been broken up into reading levels and given a choice of books at that level.  Based on their choice of books, they have created clubs that Mrs. Murray and myself will lead.  This time around, the books will have a focus on character development.  In each club group, the kids will be looking closely at how characters change and evolve throughout their story based on the problem and circumstances they encounter.  Unfortunately, due to lack of copies amongst all 4 classes, the books cannot go home and we will be focusing their independent reading time in class on just their book club books.  However, the kids are still encouraged to be reading at home from a book of their choosing.  As always, the kids will be in charge of a reading response, weekly grammar, and will continue to work on their friendly letter performance task.

In writing, we will be starting a unit on opinion/persuasive writing.

In social studies the kids will have their quiz on the Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights.  We will also continue to focus on the topic of democracy this week.
